Veterinarians

  • Dr. Neil B Tenzer , DVM, DABVP Certified, Canine/Feline


    Dr. Tenzer grew up in Dallas, Texas. Both his under graduate and graduate studies were spent at Texas A&M University. He received his bachelors degree in Veterinary science in 1964 and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1965.

    After six years of service in the U.S. army Veterinary Corps, Dr. Tenzer moved his family to Miami, Florida and established Sky Lake Animal Hospital, a private small animal practice which he has owned and operated for thirty-nine years.

    Dr. Tenzer, with his wife Jan, have four sons, four daughters-in-law, and three grandchildren. One son is a veterinarian, another, a veterinary technician. The other two strayed, with the oldest choosing the law profession. The youngest is a manager of a small business.

    COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION:

    • Dr. Tenzer’s community participation included five years on the Board of the Greater Miami Humane Society, serving in the capacity of Vice President his last year.
    • The following year saw Dr. Tenzer establishing the Pet Adoption & Wellness Society (P.A.W.S.); an organization devoted to the rehabilitation and adoption of stray animals too sick or injured to be cared for by the Humane Society. Hundreds of these animals were returned to good health & became adoptees in loving homes.

    ON THE PROFESSIONAL FRONT:

    •  Dr. Tenzer held all offices in the South Florida Veterinary Medical Association, his local veterinary association of 250 members.
    • Additionally he established the first regional continuing education academy in the Southeastern United States.
    • In regard to the emergency field, Dr. Tenzer, with four other colleagues, established one of the first emergency clinics in the United States.
    • In recognition of his contributions to the profession and his community, the Florida Veterinary Medical Association awarded Dr. Tenzer its Gold Star Award.
    • Dr. Tenzer established & coined the term, “Disaster Animal Response Team” (DART) in Miami, Florida, one of the first local community based emergency animal preparedness teams.
    • Dr. Tenzer, for the past twenty years, has been the care provider for the Miami-Dade Metro Police dogs, Narcotics unit K-9’s, Miami International Airport bomb dogs, and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue dogs.

    BOARD CERTIFICATION:

    • In 1984, Dr. Tenzer achieved Board certification as a Diplomate, American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, Certified Canine/Feline. He is one of 25 in the state of Florida with such Certification. To maintain his Diplomate status, he has recertified, by examination, in 1994 and again in 2003.
